“Kronika” ("Chronicle"), which is part of the Bytom
Cultural Center, was established in 1991. The activities of
this institution are beyond an ordinary gallery itself. It
combines various fields of art - painting, printmaking,
architecture, film, theater, music - into one artistic
message. In 2006, the institution underwent
reorganization. The center was also renovated. Moreover,
the gallery goes beyond art. It runs a bike rental shop.
Bytom is one of the oldest cities in Silesia, which is reflected in
its urban layout rooted in medieval times. The market square is
the center from whose corners the streets run out. Remnants of
the old fortification are the names of streets - Murarska
(Mansonry) and Wałowa (Earthwork). The development of the
city in the nineteenth century and the destruction of the last
century meant that most of the current buildings in the center
were erected in the Art Nouveau and neo-historicist styles.
The Cellars of the Gorywoda family are the oldest surviving
traces of medieval Bytom. We can find them under the
modern shopping pavilion at the corner of the Market
Square and Strażacka Street. There is now a popular
restaurant in the cellars. Visitors to the restaurant can touch
the thirteenth-century walls, made of dolomite slabs and
pass under the Gothic portals. Until the middle of the last
century, a baroque house of the Gorywodas stood over the
The oldest parish in Bytom is that of the Assumption of
the Blessed Virgin Mary. The first Gothic church was built
here as early as 1230. Only a few remnants of that church
have been preserved to our times. The present building is
the result of numerous reconstructions for instance, the
characteristic brick superstructure of the tower dates from
the second half of the nineteenth century. Inside the
church we can admire Gothic vaultings, Baroque altars and
a beautiful icon of Our Lady of Bytom.
Jews played an important role in the economy and culture
of Bytom from the eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century,
but the earliest mention of their presence in the city comes
from the first half of the fourteenth century. In the middle of
the eighteenth century, they got some land from Count
Henckel von Donnersmarck, owner of the State Country of
Bytom, and they were granted the right to establish a
cemetery on the city embankments. At the end of the
nineteenth century, the graveyard was already too small for
the Jewish community, and in 1860, a new cemetery was
established at Piekarska Street. At the end of the nineteenth
century, the last burial took place took place in the old
cemetery. In 1960s, the cemetery was destroyed, and the
gravestones were removed.
The Church of Saint Adalbert, located at Plac Klasztorny
(Monastery Square) in Bytom, is closely related to the 750-
year history of the Bytom Franciscans, who were probably
brought here in 1258. For centuries, Saint Nicholas was
the patron of the church. Saint Adalbert became the
patron after the Second World War. The present church is
a baroque building with a Gothic choir. The interior also is
in the Baroque style.
