The idea of establishing the parish of Saint Florian in Chorzów goes back to the pre-war times. At that time, the developing city had a few parish churches, but with the increasing population their number was too small. The efforts to build a new church were, however, hindered by the outbreak of the Second World War and later by the oppressive Stalin regime. Finally, the church was erected in 1960s. Since 2001, it has been a diocesan shrine.
