The Ruins of the Ballestrems' Palace and the Godula's House in Ruda Śląska

The ruins of the old palace belonging to the Ballestrem family and the remains of the house where Karol Godula, a Silesian entrepreneur of the first half of the nineteenth century, lived are the places forgotten for years. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, new ideas of how to make use of them came up. The authorities of Ruda Śląska passed the monuments to the Silesian Foundation "Zamek Chudów" in hopes of revitalization and making them a tourist attraction.

Ruda Śląska
The origins of Ruda Śląska were connected with the extraction of metal ores, which led to the discovery of coal in the second half of the 17th century. Its resources made entrepreneurs invest in building mines and steel mills. The industrial development attracted a number of new workers, for which the first housing estates were built. One of them is located in Wieniawskiego, Wolności, Staszica i Kościelna Streets.

The Maksymilian Chrobok Town Museum in Ruda Śląska was established in 1990. It continues the tradition of the Town Regional Chamber, which was hosted by the Society of the Friends of Ruda Śląska. The museum is located in the century-old former town hall Ore (formerly a school for girls). It collects historical artifacts mostly related to the settlements, which today are part of Ruda Śląska.

In 1997, the last tone of coal was mined from the shaft "Central" of the mine "Wawel" in Ruda Śląska. In this way, a nearly 250-year history of mining in this part of Upper Silesia ended up. Interesting facilities including the shaft “Mikołaj” have remained. The buildings of the shaft "Franciszek" are also worth seeing. The 19th-century buildings of a fire station and of an engine room, as well as a steel headframe still await revitalization.
Ruda Śląska
The first religious buildings in Rudy were built the owners of these lands, Counts of Ballestrems, in the nineteenth century. Those were two chapels of Our Lady of the Rosary and of Saint Joseph. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Francis Xavier von Ballestrem founded a new, grandeur shrine. It was the brick church of Saint Joseph, which was completed in 1904. The church was erected in the stately neo-Romanesque style. After two years, it became the seat of an independent parish.
Zabrze
The workers’ housing estate “Borsiga” in Zabrze is located in the vicinity of Bytomska St, in the district of Biskupice. It was established in 1860-1870 by Albert Borsig for the workers employees of his industrial company. In total, 60 units were built, a little worse for the workers and more comfortable for the executives. The infrastructure included schools, a tavern and a church.
Ruda Śląska
The workers' colony "Karmańskie" (its name comes from the shaft Karl Emanuel) in Ruda Śląska is one of the nicer examples of sponsored building in Upper Silesia. The construction of the colony was initiated by the Ballestrem family in the late 19th century. The Ballestrems had a large mine "Brandenburg" (later "Wawel") and a coke plant to the south of Ruda. Impressive residential buildings for miners and administration staff still stand at Wolności and Raciborska Streets.
