The City Hall in Chorzów (then Huta Królewska) was built in the 1870s. As usual, German architects aimed at combining, in an impressive way, various historical styles, but predominantly neo-Baroque. In the inter-war years, the Poles rebuilt it in a modernist manner. Inside the building, the most interesting are the stained glass windows in the Secession Hall, depicting allegories of metallurgy, mining and trade. These are rare examples of Art Deco.
"Plac Hutników” (Square of Steelworkers) is one of the Chorzów squares, where there is a statue of Friedrich Wilhelm Count von Reden, the Prussian minister of mining, a person of oustanding merit for the economy of the Prussian state, and regarded as the "father of Upper Silesian industry." This monument itself, by many considered to be controversial (as is the figure of the count himself) has very interesting history. The statue in Chorzów after being demolished was erected three times - by the Prussian government in 1853, by the Nazi authorities in 1940, and finally by the Polish authorities in 2006.
The origins of the institutions of labor inspection in the Prussian state are connected with the development of nineteenth-century capitalism. Their aim was, among others, to prevent accidents and to control juvenile work. After the unification of Germany, the Royal Industrial Inspection (Gewerbeinspektion) was formally established. In 1892, a building was erected in Chorzów, which housed the Royal Mining Inspectorate (Kӧnigliche Berginspektion).
The Elizabeth Evangelical Church was the first church built in Huta Królewska, which was later renamed Chorzów. It was for the followers of Lutheranism, among them, workers and technical staff, who came to the region at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The building was erected between 1840 and 1844. The Elizabeth Church was named in honor of the wife of the King of Prussia. Over the years, the church in Chorzów was attended by the faithful from other towns and cities of Upper Silesia, even from Katowice.
What is "Wolka"? It is a diminutive and caressing name of Wolności Street (Liberty Street) in Chorzów – It is the most important promenade in the city. It was laid out in the mid-nineteenth century, as an access road to the main railroad station of Królewska Huta. Later, elegant houses of rich burghers and public institutions were built along the street. . We have here an overview of different architectural styles, from Eclecticism, through Secession, to interwar Modernism.
The Main Post Office building in Katowice, located at the beginning of Wolności Street, is one of the architectural symbols of the city. This monumental building was erected in 1892 in neo-Gothic, the style favored by architects of the German Empire. Thanks to its size and the use of brick, the building gives the impression of a medieval construction. It is intensified by the characteristic tower with an openwork helmet – a remnant of an overhead telecommunication system from the late nineteenth century.
