In the center of Sosnowiec, in Sielec, a district located on the Czarna Przemsza river, there is an impressive building of the former palace of the Schöns, which in the interwar years was the seat of the District Court. The Eclectic palace was erected for the family of industrialists - Franz and Emma Schön at the beginning of the last century. Once the palace with a distinctive Gothic tower was surrounded by a large park lying on the river with an artificial cave, garden sheds and sculptures.
Sosnowiec is a young city. It was granted city rights in 1902. Yet, there are medieval monuments within the city. The oldest monument of the city is undoubtedly the castle in the central district of Sielec. Part of its walls may be dated even to the fifteenth century. Currently, it is a stone building on a horseshoe plan, with three not very tall towers. It houses the Sosnowiec Art Center- the Sielec Castle.
The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most distinctive buildings in Sosnowiec. The shrine was erected in the years 1893-1901, that is, just before the granting of city rights to Sosnowiec. The monumental, neo-Romanesque building was designed by Karol Kozłowski. The interior was decorated with magnificent religious and historical murals by Włodzimierz Tetmajer and Henryk Uziembło. Along with the church a stylish rectory was built.
Modrzejowska Street is one of the oldest and most important streets in the center of Sosnowiec. It serves as a promenade. The street was laid out at the beginning of the second half of the nineteenth century, after opening of the Warsaw-Vienna Railway station. It then ran from the city center, which is near the train station, towards the then yet independent village of Modrzejowa, which is now a southern district of Sosnowiec. In the street we can encounter a few nice buildings from the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth centuries.
The palace of Dietl in Sosnowiec is one of the most beautiful residential buildings not only in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie, but also in whole Silesia. The palace was erected by Heinrich Dietl at the end of the nineteenth century. Heinrich Dietl was a German entrepreneur, who launched in Sosnowiec the first worsted spinning mill in the Polish Kingdom. The palace was built in the neo-Baroque style. It impresses with its magnificent interior design.
The first believers gathered in the Lutheran Church in Sosnowiec Pogoń in 1880. Interestingly, one of the factory halls of the spinning mill, which belonged to Heinrich Dietel, a Protestant and a German entrepreneur was religious purposes. After a few years, a relatively short tower was added to the church. The result is an Eclectic building with some Baroque features.
