The Post-Cisterian Monastery Complex in Rudy

For a long time, there have been no monks in their characteristic white robes, with black scapulars, in the Cistercian monastery in Rudy, near Racibórz. The monastery was dissolved at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Before that, for nearly six centuries, people had prayed, culture had been spread, land cultivated, factories built in this corner of Silesia. A beautiful white church and a monastery complex of the Diocese of Gliwice – that is what has been left after the monks. Efforts are underway to put the complex onto the UNESCO World Heritage LiSt

The church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the most important part of the Cistercian monastery and palace complex in Rudy. It is one of the oldest shrines of Silesia. Its pride is the image of the Madonna and Child, revered for centuries by local believers as miraculous. Originally, the church was Gothic, as is the image of the Madonna, dating back to the fifteenth century. In 1995, the bishop of the Diocese of Gliwice raised the church to the rank of the Diocesan Sanctuary of Our Lady the Humble of Rudy.
One of the historic monuments of the village of Rudy is a building of the former infirmary founded by Dr. Juliusz Roger in 1858. While in service, the infirmary bore the name of Saint Charles. Dr Roger was the doctor of Duke, Victor I, and became known as a social activist and a passionate of folk culture. The small hospital building was built in the style of Historicism, with some neo-Gothic elements. It now houses the Education Center of Landscape Parks.
Located among the forests, the village of Rudy is known primarily for the old Cistercian abbey and the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To the east of the parish church, it is worthwhile to visit a cemetery, which has been operating on this site since the late seventeenth century. The neo-Romanesque church of Saint Mary Magdalene can be found on the cemetery. In its vicinity, we can see, among others, the tombstone of Juliusz Roger, a doctor and social activist, who still remains in the memory of the local population.
