The Evangelical Church of Saint John the Baptist is located in the center of Świętochłowice at Katowicka Street. The church was funded by Prince Donnersmarck in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, who donated land for the construction and expressed his desire that the shrine was to face the building of the Directorate of the Donnersmarck's Mines and Steelworks. Like many contemporary Silesian churches, both Lutheran and Catholic, it was built in the neo-Gothic style.
The building of the former Directorate of the Donnersmarcks' Mines and Steelworks in Świętochłowice dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century. It is one of the memorabilia left after the powerful and influential family, which at one time had a whole network of mines, steel mills and demesnes in Silesia. This family came from Spiski Czwartek, a small village, located in the Slovak part of Spiš (the German name of the village is Donnersmarck).
Świętochłowice, the smallest district in Upper Silesia, was granted city rights in 1947. However, the Świętochłowice City Hall, located at the current Katowicka Street Katowice, was built as early as the 20s of the last century. It was erected for the administrative authorities of the commune formed in 1922, which included the villages, which until then had been part of the district of Bytom. The Eclectic building has distinct features of Baroque architecture. Inside, there are impressive stained glass windows by Stanisław Ligoń.
The construction of the church of Saints Peter and Paul in Świętochłowice was preceded by a significant event: On June 20, 1884, the mass of water cut off 43 miners from the outside world in the Świętochłowice mine "Germany". Miraculously all of them were rescued after a few days. It was believed that the intervention of Providence saved their lives. So, the survivors took the initiative to erect a church. The construction of the neo-Gothic building was completed in 1891.
The history of modern water supply systems dates back to the mid-nineteenth century. Characteristic water towers appeared in Upper Silesia in the second half of that century. One of the most beautiful buildings of this kind, which has been preserved to our times, is a water tower in Świętochłowice. It dominates the landscape of the city center, rising above Katowicka Street. The tower was built in 1909. It is crowned with a dome in the neo-Baroque style.
