It can said that from at least several decades, old handicraft skills are in danger of disappearance on the one hand, on the other they are an object of increasing interest. Hence, numerous initiatives came to being, designed to preserve endangered professions and to promote them. One of them is the Traditional Craft Trail, which is a thematic route running through the rich, in terms of regional traditions, Cieszyn Silesia. The initiators of the creation of the trail were institutions and associations from both sides of the border, so it is of a cross-border character.
When visiting places on the trail, tourists have a chance not only to become acquainted with interesting objects or collections, but also to meet local artists and craftsmen, performing professions that are already rare. The route includes, among others, towns known for nurturing of old traditions, such as Istebna, Jaworzynka or Koniaków.
The route connects places where we can learn about, among others, the bygone blacksmith, pottery, production of traditional musical instruments or, popular in Cieszyn, lace knitting. Indeed, what the trail is recognisable by is the characteristic motif of koniakowska lace.
Traditional Craft Trail was created as part of a project under the name Academy of Vanishing Professions. In its framework, based on the route objects and registered craftsmen and artists, among the opportunities created for the interested is the one to try their hand at traditional crafts.
