The Silesia Metropolis consists of 41 cities and municipalities of Silesia and Zagłębie: Bytom, Chorzów, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Gliwice, Katowice, Mysłowice, Piekary Śląskie, Ruda Śląska, Siemianowice Śląskie, Sosnowiec, Świętochłowice, Tychy and Zabrze (www.gzmetropolia.pl). It is the largest metropolitan area in Poland, which sucessfully disproves the stereotype of a big city devoid of green areas. There is no other urban center in Poland whose area would be in a quarter comprised of forests and parks, including Silesian Park, which is larger than New York's Central Park. More than 600 hectares of greenery hides countless attractions. Silesian Amusement Park, Silesian Zoological Garden, Planetarium, heritage park, narrow gauge railway and Elka cable car give endless possibilities for leisure time spending.
Walking around the cities of Silesian Metropolis is very enjoyable, too. Admirers of art and architecure will be delighted to visit beautiful castles, palaces and other historical buildings, which are often still holding the original furnishings dating back centuries. Amateurs of outdoor activities will find here areas of water with entire infrastructure, and extensive green areas to traverse on foot or by bike. And if that is not enough, you can see a true desert, one of the greatest natural curiosities in this part of Europe: Błędowska Desert, which geographically belongs to Lesser Poland, but a part of it lying in Dąbrowa Górnicza fits within the Metropolis.
Twenty years ago, inviting tourists and promising them al-inclusive cultural and tourist experiences would sound surreal, unless they wanted to watch the mineshafts and stroll through fuming spoil tips. It is known that today the post-industrial heritage is transformed into tourist asset here. The symbol of this brand tourism product is the pride of our region: the Industrial Monuments Route. Its most interesting objects are located in the Silesia Metropolis . Their authenticity and uniqueness reflect the traditional culture of these areas and ipoint to the contemporary face of the Metropolis and its tourist attractions. Many places situated on the Industrial Monuments Route or the Wooden Architecture Trail can be found at the heart of the province. Here you can also see the sites belonging to the Route of Modernism, which include Katowice's architecture of the Interwar period (the length of the trail is 5.5 km).
The cultural offer of the Silesia Metropolis is also characterized by unique diversity. It is no wonder since it comprises the potential of cities. Several theatres perform here, including one of the best musical theaters in Poland – Rozrywka Theatre in Chorzów. There is also a dramatic scene of the Wyspiański Silesian Theatre in Katowice and one of the best opera houses in Poland: the Silesian Opera in Bytom. Once Silesia used to be called a cultural desert, now it is visited for great events.
