The history of lands that currently constitute the Silesian Voivodeship (historically these are terrains of Silesia and Lesser Poland) is very turbulent. The Silesia Metropolis consists of 41 cities and municipalities of Silesia and Zagłębie: Bytom, Chorzów, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Gliwice, Katowice, Mysłowice, Piekary Śląskie, Ruda Śląska, Siemianowice Śląskie, Sosnowiec, Świętochłowice, Tychy and Zabrze (www.silesiametropolia.eu). It is the largest metropolitan area in Poland, which sucessfully disproves the stereotype of a big city devoid of green areas.
