On Wednesday, October 13, from the Polish cities competing for the title of European Capital of Culture 2016 identified five culture minister recommended to the name. The title has sought to eleven Polish cities. Together with Katowice qualified for the finals: Gdańsk, Lublin, Warsaw and Wroclaw.
European Cities of Culture titles are awarded since 1985. In 2000 he received Krakow. In 2005 the "European City of Culture was renamed the European Capital of Culture." For three years they receive it, two cities at once - one of the so-called Old European Union, the second - with the New. This year, the European Capitals of Culture are the Hungarian city of Pecs in Hungary and Essen in Germany, especially, because outside the European Union, Istanbul.
The title of European Capital of Culture "is associated with a prize of 1.5 million euros from the European Commission, is a great chance to change the city's image. The next stage of the competition, in which the Selection Committee will select one city, is planned for June - July 2011. The final decision of the Council of the European Union on the choice of one Spanish and one Polish city on the European Capital of Culture 2016 will be announced in the first quarter of 2012. Fingers crossed for Katowice!
