For decades, winding towers were distinctive features of the landscape of many Silesian towns and cities. But at the end of the last century the mines started to be closed down and their buildings - often historical – tore down. An interesting example of adaptation of the erstwhile mine for new purposes are the engine and pithead rooms of the former Coal Mine "Gliwice", which became part of an ambitious project "New Gliwice".

The building was erected in the Latin cross plan, with three naves and the choir. The tower rises up to a height of over 70 meters. The facade and the walls of the church were decorated with impressive and glazed and clinker bricks. In 1992, Pope John Paul II raised the church to the rank of the Cathedral of the Gliwice diocese.

A campus extends to the east of the old city of Gliwice, where most of the university buildings of the oldest technical higher school – the Silesian University of Technology stand. Tourists should visit this place, because there are a lot of historic buildings worth attention. For instance, at the corner of Wrocławska and Strzody Streets there is an interesting building of the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology, originally built (at the end of the nineteenth century) as one of the first hotels in the city.
