The Old Town of Bielsko is the oldest part of
the downtown. It is located on Town Hill. It has
preserved a medieval urban layout. Beside old
arcaded town houses there are the castle of
the Sułkowski Dukes and the Cathedral of
Saint Nicholas within the Old Town. This part of
the city, which was originally surrounded with
defence walls, is currently limited by Chrobry
Square (Plac Chrobrego) and Orkana,
Waryńskiego, Zamkowa, Św. Trójcy Streets.
The Private Wladyslaw Reymont Museum of Literature
in Bielsko-Biala is one of the most unusual places in the
city as well as in Poland. It possesses a unique
atmosphere. The museum was founded and has been
managed for years by Tadeusz Modrzejewski, a man of
great passion, who is an editor, graphic artist and a lover
of literature, especially the works by Władysław
Reymont. In 1989, he created the museum at 1
Pankiewicz Street in the Old Town.
The Saint Nicholas' Cathedral with its
distinctive belltower resembling Italian
campanile dominates over Bielsko-Biała.
Despite the fact that its origins date back to
the 15th century, it is difficult to find any
Gothic traces in its architecture. It is due to
the renovation from the beginning of the last
century. It gave the neo-Romanesque
appearance to the building. Inside the church
we can encounter many styles. The church has
an interesting history. It was several times
burnt down by fires and looted by soldiers. In
1992, the church became the cathedral of the newly created diocese of Bielsko and Żywiec.
The origins of the Castle of Bielsko-Biała date from the Piast dynasty, but it owes its present eclectic appearance to the Sułkowski family, who were its owners from the middle of the 18th century to 1945. Nowadays, the castle houses collections of the Bielsko-Biała Museum. During the visit to the castle we can experience the past elegance and learn more about the history of the city, admiring old and contemporary art, and even listen to good music.
The Main Post Office is one of the most emblematic
buildings of Bielsko-Biala. It is one of the main
landmarks of the city. The building with its characteristic
dome and the statues of Jupiter and Mercury was
erected at a record pace in the period of twelve months
from 1897 to 1898. It is one of the buildings designed by
Karol Korn, a famous architect from Bielsko. The post
office still operates in this historic building nowadays.
Zion with the Temple in Jerusalem built by King
Solomon is a holy place. But Zion also means the
entire city of Jerusalem and is inhabitants are
called the Children of Zion or God’s Chosen. Zion
in Bielsko-Biala Bielsko is the centre of the
protestant community. The congregation is
concentrated in the close vicinity of Martin Luther
Square - at the Church of the Redeemer and the
statue of the great reformer, in schools and in the
Augustana Publishing House.
