The New Jewish Cemetery at Piekarska Street in Bytom is one of the few active cemeteries in Silesia. It was established in the 60s of the nineteenth century, during the industrial boom in Bytom, which resulted in the influx of Jews into the city. In the cemetery, there are almost 1500 graves. Eight hundred burials have survived, including those of the distinguished inhabitants of Bytom, such as the families of the Loewich and Friedlaender families. A lapidary was created from the tombstones from the old Bytom cemetery.
The Bytom Mater Dolorosa Cemetery is one of the most beautiful and richest in sepulchral art monuments of the necropoles in Upper Silesia. It was founded in the late 60s of the nineteenth century. It is located at Piekarska Street, which runs from the city center to the north. In 1882, a Neo-Gothic chapel, designed by Hugo Heer, was erected on the cemetery. In the following decades, well-known inhabitants of Bytom were buried here. Their graves are decorated with beautiful monuments.
One of the most distinguished people in the history of Bytom was Georg Brüning, a Westphalian, who died in 1932, and who previously has served as mayor for 36 years. He contributed to the transformation of the provincial town into a beautiful and well-maintained city. We can admire his villa at 4 Legionów Street. It was designed Carl Brugger in the Art Nouveau style. The villa was built in the early years of the twentieth century.
Piekarska Street is one of the main streets in the downtown district of Bytom. It once was the main trade route towards Piekary Śląskie. In the second half of the nineteenth century, a cemetery known as "Mater Dolorosa” and a Jewish graveyard were established along the suburban sections of the street. Grand townhouses, the building of the Main Post Office and the Church of the Holy Trinity were erected closer to the city center. In 1913, the first streetcar line was launched along Piekarska Street, which is still in service today.
The building of the Main Post Office in Bytom was erected at the beginning of the last century. Chronologically, this is the third seat of this institution in the city. The edifice was designed by Karl Fischer in the neo-Renaissance style. After the last renovation, decorative pediments, massive portals, elegant bay windows and loggias regained their splendor. Worth special attention are the bas-reliefs placed on the facade of the building, which, among others, present the scenes of how the old post office operated in the past.
The water tower standing at Oświęcimska Street in Bytom, is worth of interest due to its innovative design and form, which is an expression of functionalism, which at the time of its construction was a fashionable architectural style. The tower was erected in 1934-1935 on pillars and on deep foundations, which protect the 44- meter tall building from the effects of mining tremors. The tower was built of reinforced concrete and, in particular, of high-quality portland cement.
