The Jan Smoleń First Secondary School in Bytom continues the traditions of the Polish Gymnasium established in 1932. It was the first and for a long time the only Polish school in the German state. Until the outbreak of the Second World War the school was housed in the building in today's Aleja Legionów (Legion Avenue). After 1945, it was moved to the expressionist building of the former State Real Gymnasium, which was built in 1929-1930.
