The museum established in 1981 is the only such institution in Poland with an extensive collection related to the history of mining, mining technology and culture, located in the building of the former local administrative unit (Poviat Starosty) dated back to 1875. Multimedia exhibitions, rich educational offer, interesting collections of musical instruments images of St. Barbara.
Route chronicle
The Museum is located in a historic building of the former local administrative unit, erected 136 years ago in 1875. The style and decor of the building supplements the eclectic trend, popularized at the end of the 19th century. Whereas the representative “Stained glass window room” is arranged according to the Scandinavian Gothic style. The rich collection of the Zabrze Museum includes, inter alia: a mining axe from the 17th century used by miners from Olkusz and numerous photographs, majority of which is over one hundred years old. In the Museum there is also the 18th-century drainage water pump (“kunszt”), the only one so-well preserved in Europe. In the Coal Mining Museum we can admire the exhibition “Secrets of the Carboniferous Forest”. It includes fossils from before 300 million years, as well as natural-sized models of huge dragonflies and a 1.5-meter Carboniferous centipede.

W związku z prowadzonymi pracami remontowymi budynku przy ul. 3 Maja 19, gmach Muzeum jest zamknięty dla zwiedzających od 1 listopada 2017 r. aż do odwołania. Czas trwania remontu planowany jest na ok. 2 lata.
