For decades, winding towers were distinctive features of the landscape of many Silesian towns and cities. But at the end of the last century the mines started to be closed down and their buildings - often historical – tore down. An interesting example of adaptation of the erstwhile mine for new purposes are the engine and pithead rooms of the former Coal Mine "Gliwice", which became part of an ambitious project "New Gliwice".
