The castle of Racibórz is an old stronghold, whose origins are not fully known. The building preserved to this day results from many reconstructions carried out in the following centuries, and therefore, it combines different architectural styles. One of the most valuable objects is the castle chapel of Saint Thomas Becket of Canterbury, known as the pearl of the Silesian Gothic. The castle of Racibórz I s now open to the public. Numerous cultural events are held here.
Nowadays, beer is produced mainly by large
companies, which affects its quality.
Therefore, more and more discerning beer
drinkers are turning to the products of smaller
breweries. Racibórz Castle Brewery prides
itself on the oldest tradition of beer brewing
in the region. According to written sources, it
is known that in this area, beer brewing dates
back to at least as early as the thirteenth
century. The first mention of the ducal
brewery comes from the sixteenth century.
The present church of John the Baptist is a neo-Gothic building dated from the years 1856-1866.
It is located at Morawska Street in Racibórz Ostróg. However, the history of the church on
this site is older, as there were successive
wooden churches in this place from the
thirteenth century on. The church, which
sustained damage during the flood in 1997, is
known for its venerated, highly suggestive
painted image of Christ the Suffering.
The church of Saint James is located at the
Racibórz market square. It is a post-Dominican
church, which was part of the former
monastery, dating from the fifteenth century.
Dominicans were brought to Raciborz at the end
of the first half of the thirteenth century. The
church building has a rather checkered history.
It was burned down in fires, and as a result, was
rebuilt many times. The Dominican monastery
standing next to the church was demolished
after the dissolution of the monasteries in
Prussia in 1810.
The Racibórz Cultural Centre is one of the most important places on the cultural map of Racibórz. As befits the distinguished institution, it is housed in an old historic townhouse at 21 Chopina Street. The house was rebuilt in the Classicist style in the first half of the 19th century. In 1846, piano virtuoso Franz Liszt gave a performance in its elegant concert hall. In the interwar period, the hotel “German House” operated in it.
