The origins of the street go back to the mid-eighteenth century, when it was given its present shape in 1772-1785. In that time, it was called Krakowska Street. Most of the buildings along the street date from the late eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries and represent the so-called Josephine style, which was then promoted in the Austrian Empire.

It was built in the nineteenth century, and soon - because of its convenient location - replaced the Old Town Square. The present form of the square is the result of the idea from the beginning of this century. The square is dominated by the Castle of the Sulkowski Dukes.
