The Jewish cemetery in Zabrze

The Jewish cemetery in Zabrze is situated at the current Cmentarna Street. It was founded in the second half of the nineteenth century (1871), at the same time, when the Jewish community, and the nearest cemeteries were located in Gliwice and Bytom. Funerals were held here from 1872 to 1954. Some 500 tombstones have been preserved - both traditional tombstones and monumental tombs that were modelled on those ones we know from Christian cemeteries.

One of the most interesting monuments in Zabrze is the house at 7 Cmentarna Street. This is an experimental building erected in 1927. Built on typical foundations, it has walls made of steel. It is currently the best example of this type of architecture that is represented in several other buildings, jokingly called "cans". These were prefabricated buildings, which were erected in less than a month.

The housing estate "Zandka" is part of the complex of buildings that were originally associated with the former Donnersmarck Ironworks in Zabrze (later Huta Zabrze). The complex, which was being built from 1900 -1920s, is located in the area of the current streets of Bończyka, Bytomska, Cmentarna, Krakusa and Stalmacha in so-called Małe Zabrze. About 40 buildings (with comfortable apartments at that time) and the service facilities including were to become a kind of a flagship of the company.

The building of the former hotel "Admiralspalast", located at Wolności Street, is considered one of the landmarks of Zabrze. This five-storey building was erected close to the train station in 1924-1928. In the heyday of the hotel, there was a Bavarian beerhouse on the ground work, a restaurant, a café and a ballroom on the first floor, and above hotel rooms. On the roof, an open air dance platform was arranged. After WW2, the hotel changed its name for "President", "Foreman" and "Monopoly".

Wolności Street (Liberty Street) in Zabrze is the thoroughfare of the city, and one of the longest in Poland. It stretches for almost 10 km, from the border with Ruda Śląska (in the east) to the Gliwice (in the west). While walking along Wolności Street, we will encounter, among others, three churches (including the historic wooden church of Saint Hedwig), the Mining Museum "Królowa Luiza (Queen Louise)" and the impressive building of the former hotel "Admiralspalast". In the central part the street is an elegant promenade of Zabrze

The building of the Main Post Office in Zabrze is among the most beautiful historic buildings of this big Silesian city. The edifice was erected in front of the Zabrze railway station in 1909-1911. It is an impressive, brick and stone building on a rectangular plan. It stylistically refers to Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Three pediments with wavy sides are especially beautiful.

The Upper Silesian Breweries in Zabrze boast of more than a 150- year-old tradition and continue to brew beer nowadays. The first brewery in today's Zabrze was launched by Loebel Haendler in 1860. It was located at the road called The Way of the Heir to the Throne - later, the main street of the city - Wolności Street, which means Liberty Street. Beer from the HAENDLER brewery enjoyed great reputation - some brands were also popular outside Silesia. Today, the brewery is modern, however, a few pre-war buildings and traditional equipment for brewing beer have been preserved.
