As the process of the revitalization of brownfield sites is still underway, not abandoned or underused industrial and commercial facilities have been redeveloped or reused. One of the first examples of the adaptation of an industrial plant for residential purposes is Bolko Loft within the premises of the former Mining and Metallurgical Plant “Biały Orzeł” - "White Eagle" in Bytom. The project was immediately recognized, and in 2006, it was selected in the competition -"Poland. Icons of architecture”, as one of the 20 most interesting architectural projects in Poland after 1989.
The water tower standing at Oświęcimska Street in Bytom, is worth of interest due to its innovative design and form, which is an expression of functionalism, which at the time of its construction was a fashionable architectural style. The tower was erected in 1934-1935 on pillars and on deep foundations, which protect the 44- meter tall building from the effects of mining tremors. The tower was built of reinforced concrete and, in particular, of high-quality portland cement.
Piekary Śląskie
The Bytomska Street in Piekary Śląskie is the axis around which the life of the city revolves. The artery is almost 5 km long. It starts in the south, near the border with Bytom, and then runs almost straight north to end up in the district of Kozłowa Góra. In this street we can find the most important and most interesting objects in Piekary Śląskie including the surgical hospital (formerly the “Unia Bracka” Hospital), the city council, the Schaeffers’ manufacturing facility of sacred art and the Sanctuary with the Calvary.
The St Hyacinth Church in the district of Rozbrak in Bytom was built between 1908 and 1911. It was erected near the former chapel, which was dedicated to this holy monk. The neo-Romanesque church was modeled somewhat on the cathedral in German Limburg. The facades were built of sandstone slabs. The church is a three-nave basilica with two 57-meter tall towers on either side of the facade. There is is a crypt of Saint Joseph underground.
The New Jewish Cemetery at Piekarska Street in Bytom is one of the few active cemeteries in Silesia. It was established in the 60s of the nineteenth century, during the industrial boom in Bytom, which resulted in the influx of Jews into the city. In the cemetery, there are almost 1500 graves. Eight hundred burials have survived, including those of the distinguished inhabitants of Bytom, such as the families of the Loewich and Friedlaender families. A lapidary was created from the tombstones from the old Bytom cemetery.
The Bytom Mater Dolorosa Cemetery is one of the most beautiful and richest in sepulchral art monuments of the necropoles in Upper Silesia. It was founded in the late 60s of the nineteenth century. It is located at Piekarska Street, which runs from the city center to the north. In 1882, a Neo-Gothic chapel, designed by Hugo Heer, was erected on the cemetery. In the following decades, well-known inhabitants of Bytom were buried here. Their graves are decorated with beautiful monuments.
