galleries of contemporary art in Poland,
operating since 1960. It presents and
promotes modern art through the exhibitions
of works by Polish and foreign artists, theme
exhibitions, film and performance festivals,
international artist residencies, happenings in
urban space and concerts. Since 1962, a
nationwide competition for painters known as

Mickiewicz Street, running parallel to 3 Maja
Street, is in terms of architecture one of the
most interesting arteries Bielsko-Biala. Along
the street there are a lot of historical buildings,
representing both Secession and other styles.
The best-known building is a villa of Theodore
Sixt from 1883 and a villa of Hermann
Schneider from 1905, which is kind of a
combination of Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque.
The building of the Municipal Savings
Bank in Bielsko-Biała, also known as “
Patria” was for many years the seat of
the restaurant of the same name. It is yet
another building designed by Karol Korn,
an outstanding and of merit for the city.
The landmark splendid building with a
clock and city’s coat of arms was erected
in 1889. The edifice combines the NeoRenaissance and Baroque styles, and the
interior represents the Neo-Rococo and
11 Listopada Street is the main promenade of
Bielsko-Biała. It is a shopping street and once
it was a trade route. It runs through the
historic center of the Old Town of Biała. It is
900 metres long. The origins of the street go
back to the mid-eighteenth century, when it
was given its present shape in 1772-1785. In
that time, it was called Krakowska Street. Most
of the buildings along the street date from the
late eighteenth and the early nineteenth
centuries and represent the so-called
Josephine style, which was then promoted in
the Austrian Empire.
Boleslaw Chrobry Square (Plac Bolesława
Chrobrego) is the focal point of Bielsko-Biala. It
was built in the nineteenth century, and soon -
because of its convenient location - replaced
the Old Town Square. The present form of the
square is the result of the idea from the
beginning of this century. The square is
dominated by the Castle of the Sulkowski
Dukes. The buildings around the square
represent different architectural styles. The
square has an area of 3600 square metres. In
the east it is adjacent to busy 3 Maja Street
and to the south to Wzgórze Street.
The origins of the Castle of Bielsko-Biała date from the Piast dynasty, but it owes its present eclectic appearance to the Sułkowski family, who were its owners from the middle of the 18th century to 1945. Nowadays, the castle houses collections of the Bielsko-Biała Museum. During the visit to the castle we can experience the past elegance and learn more about the history of the city, admiring old and contemporary art, and even listen to good music.
