What is "Wolka"? It is a diminutive and caressing name
of Wolności Street (Liberty Street) in Chorzów – It is the
most important promenade in the city. It was laid out in
the mid-nineteenth century, as an access road to the
main railroad station of Królewska Huta. Later, elegant
houses of rich burghers and public institutions were built
along the street. . We have here an overview of different
architectural styles, from Eclecticism, through Secession,
to interwar Modernism.
The Chorzów Cultural Center is one of the most important
cultural institutions in the city. Its origins date back to the 20s
of the last century, when Polish inhabitants of then Królewska
Huta decided to build their own Municipal People's House. A
theater was opened in 1934, and the left wing of the building
was added five years later. To this day, a lot of stars of the
Polish stage have performed here.
The City Hall in Chorzów (then Huta Królewska) was built
in the 1870s. As usual, German architects aimed at
combining, in an impressive way, various historical styles,
but predominantly neo-Baroque. In the inter-war years,
the Poles rebuilt it in a modernist manner. Inside the
building, the most interesting are the stained glass
windows in the Secession Hall, depicting allegories of
metallurgy, mining and trade. These are rare examples of
The Main Post Office building in Katowice, located at the
beginning of Wolności Street, is one of the architectural
symbols of the city. This monumental building was erected
in 1892 in neo-Gothic, the style favored by architects of
the German Empire. Thanks to its size and the use of
brick, the building gives the impression of a medieval
construction. It is intensified by the characteristic tower
with an openwork helmet – a remnant of an overhead
telecommunication system from the late nineteenth
The Elizabeth Evangelical Church was the first church built
in Huta Królewska, which was later renamed Chorzów. It
was for the followers of Lutheranism, among them,
workers and technical staff, who came to the region at the
turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The
building was erected between 1840 and 1844. The
Elizabeth Church was named in honor of the wife of the
King of Prussia. Over the years, the church in Chorzów was
attended by the faithful from other towns and cities of
Upper Silesia, even from Katowice.
The Church of Martin Luther in Chorzów is one of the two
Protestant churches in the city (the other one is the church
of Elisabeth). The building was erected in the late
nineteenth century. The first Protestant church services
were held in Chorzów (starting from 1801 on) in the
meeting hall of the building of the then office of the
steelworks, and afterwards, (between 1804 and 1844) in
the prayer hall, which had been prepared in the newly built
school. In 1825, the cemetery was established. It was
initially shared by both Protestants and Catholics.
